Project Live It aspires to encourage people to try new and interesting things and to help others to do the same. I'll be posting what I've been inspired to try/learn/see/do each Friday.
You know when all of a sudden you realize your hair is too long and scraggly and you're fed up with the split ends and you just. can't. deal.? That was me at 10 pm last night and I decided it was as good a time as ever to try out the ponytail method.
The ponytail method (another gem from YouTube) is pretty much the simplest way ever to cut your own hair. You just put it up in a super high ponytail, hold it out straight, and cut across the distal end. When you let it out, you get layers...lots of layers...beware! It literally takes less than a minute, but I spent another few freehandedly cutting the back (which ends up the longest) shorter, so that it was closer in length to the front (which ends up the shortest).
To avoid the freshly hacked look (or to thin out the bottom if you have thicker hair) you can take little sections of hair, twist them, and, with the scissors partly open and the points oriented downwards, run the "V" between the scissor blades down the lower part of the twist, opening and closing them a little bit as you move down to cut just a little ways into the twist. This shaves some of the hairs off, at random, for a more natural look. (Also learned from a YouTube video which I unfortunately can't find! In any case, YouTube has no shortage of DIY haircutting inspiration.)
It's actually pretty fun to cut your own hair -- and if it sucks, hey, just wear it up for a little bit :)
